18 U.S. Code 1001

Under this federal law, you are prohibited from lying or hiding information from a federal official, whether orally or through written statements in any matter that is within the jurisdiction of any branch of the federal government. The statute states that you can be charged with this offense if you knowingly and willfully falsify, conceal, or cover up, make any false or fraudulent statements, or make or use any falsified document in a federal matter. You can be fined and subjected to a prison sentence of up to 5 years. If the false statements concern international or domestic terrorism, the prison sentence may be extended for up to eight years.

If the offense concerns the legislative branch, it applies to any administrative matter, which may include claims for payment, matters involving the obtainment of services of property, personnel, employment, or support services, documents that are required to be submitted to Congress or in relation to investigations or reviews made by the Senate or the House.
